Metal Shop Blog #12 – The Top 20 of 2008!

If you tuned in to the show this past week, you heard our Top 20 of 2008.  There were a lot of great albums put out this year, so as usual we turned to you guys to compile the list.  This list reflects everything that YOU want to hear and everything you called us about throughout the year.  Additional marks were given to albums that are just plain awesome, which albums have been successful and which bands have toured the most.  All of these things are variables in determining what goes where on the list.  So, in case you didn’t listen and follow along, here is the list.  Below it you find both mine (Kevin) and Steve’s personal top 10 albums of 2008.

The Metal Shop Top 20 of 2008:

20. Origin – The Antithesis
19. Abigail Williams – In The Shadow of A Thousand Suns
18. Soilent Green – In The Presence
17. Unearth – The March
16. Arsis – We Are the Nightmare
15. Exodus – There Will Be Blood
14. The Faceless – Planetary Duality
13. Trivium – Shogun
12. Kingdom of Sorrow – Kingdom of Sorrow
11. Misery Index – Traitors
10. Cavalera Conspiracy – Inflikted
09. Children of Bodom – Blooddrunk
08. Testament – The Formation of Damnation
07. Amon Amarth – Twilight of the Thunder God
06. Meshuggah – obZen
05. Gojira – The Way of All Flesh
04. All That Remains – Overcome
03. Dragonforce – Ultra Beatdown
02. Opeth – Watershed
01. Slipknot – All Hope Is Gone

KEVIN:  Pretty decent looking list there.  A couple albums I’ve moved around a bit for my Top 10, a couple that stayed the same and a couple I’d throw completely away to never come anywhere near my personal list again.  This is the first time I’ve put together my list this year so most of it is right off the top of my head:

Kevin’s Top 10 Albums of 2008:

10. Textures – Silhouettes

09. Arsis – We Are the Nightmare

08. Rotten Sound – Cycles

07. Misery Index – Traitors

06. Meshuggah – obZen

05. Origin – Antithesis

04. The Faceless – Planetary Duality

03. Neuraxis – The Thin Line Between

02. Opeth – Watershed

01. Gojira – The Way of All Flesh

And I have to give an honorable mention to my other favorite album of the year because I can’t include it on this list.  It’s not metal at all:  Ott – Skylon -  here’s a sample if you’re interested in some nice dub beats with fat basslines.

Steve will add his top 10 when he he decides to not be lazy.  So check back soon and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Meshuggah and The Faceless at ElCo in February!  What a way to start the year!

Steve:

Metal!!  Yeah!  Love it!!  Holidays!!  No!  Don’t love it!  And I will tell you why…

OK, I am a fan of certain PARTS of this beautiful blizzardy time of year:  SNOWboarding, peppermint tasting stuff (yes it’s metal), SNOWboarding….uhhh.  And then the rest of the stuff I could live without:  Commercials everywhere you look, overpriced holiday themed food and speacials, people asking me what Hanukkah is and if I celebrate it, people thinking they can cook when, in actuality, the spirit of Christmas can NOT make you stop sucking at making brownies…

I’d probably be in a better holiday mood if there was SNOW in the MOUNTAINS, but alas…  Perhaps my jobs affords me a slightly more magnified look at the world ,media-wise, but it seems that it’s all about getting you out of the house and into every and any store out there to take what money you may have slaved for and hand it over for cheap slave labor crap.  Now, I like stores.  I like shopping.  I do.  It’s been programmed into my skull since birth that shopping and buying is where it’s AT!  BUT, that does not mean I have to give in to the machine and agree to suck up everything my friends and I see on commercials.  We need new stuff because we are TOLD we need them.  We feel obliged to buy toys for everyone because we are TOLD to do so.  It just ain’t the case, man.  This is my 2 cents, if nothing else.

I am going to spend every spare buck I have, traveling to see my family and taking my friends to events that will last in their memories far longer than any music player and give way more happiness than any DVD of Shark Story 17 can bring.  I just think that if you or I die tomorrow, it’s better to have a memory of something radical (maybe a metal show or a trip to Canada) than having the last memory of me or you, one more present.  One of thousands that we get ina lifetime.  We are buried in life with stuff we just do not need, though we are told we do.  Get up, get out!  I’d rather receive nothing at all than something I know was manufactured five million times, for profit, without heart.
Saturday night!  El Co!  With Soilent/Misery/BoBE!! The BDM.  Be there.

Blogggggin!  THE most fun you can have on the internets….IF it’s Metal Shop doing the bloggin, of course.  Yah.  And yes, Kevin is correct in saying that I am rad and he is not….when it comes to talking about mothers, at the very least.  Honestly, we both had a ton of fun at the Throwdown and were happy to see a bunch of insane and drunk friends hanging out, enjoying themselves.  The EQC was infiltrated that night by Rockaholics and a better time could not have been had!  The other Steve and other other Steve thumb wrestling just cracked me up!  I thought WE were funny….

And really, who doesn’t enjoy a huge pillowfight between a bunch of good lookin dames, huh?  Yeeah.

Good times… and ONE o these days…. we SHALL get back to our Dick’s Burger Off….uhhh, I think Part THREE…

So many good shows lately!  (Bragingly speaking)  I’ve hung out with ol Tom Morello (he covered Dirty Deeds too) and Sir Danzig (always in leather) in the last week or so.  Saw Dimmu own it live, Dragonforce shred beyong shreditude and Down was groovingly crunchy!

Aaaand, Gwar soon, Exodus on Saturday playing Bonded live all the way through, In Flames with Goji and I am stoked to see All Shall Perish at the Job For a Cowboy show!  And the Emerald City Deathfest with The Faceless coming up…

Mucho metal.  Always.  Great local shows as well.  The NW is chock full of em!  You just have to look.

You ARE your scene.  Make it happen!  Get clicking on the MySpace action and find yer new favorite band!

STEVE:

Hey!  A Blog!  Nice.  So the year is coming to a close and that leads to us thinking back, recalling all the radicalness that the year 2009 gave us.  And there was LOTS!  Good shows, good releases and good times all around.  And we will GET to some of that action soon enough.  For NOW though, a couple stories.  Only a couple, although we have MANY… because Kev and I were talking about how awesome we have gotten to be in the last few years thanks to The Rock and our fav three hours of the week: METAL SHOP!  Here’s a story that’s near and dear to my heart…….

It was approximately SIX years ago.  Hanging out alone, backstage at The Moore, waiting for Arch Enemy to hit the stage…  Now, I had gotten there a little late, but it was hard to be bummed out on the fact because a lil band we call SLAYER (they ripped that place apart by the way) was hitting the stage shortly after good ol Arch Enemy was done jud jud shredding us.  I always take advantage of free… ANYthing, so there I am enjoying some fresh salsa, chips and a can of Sprite when a man I had never met at that point, a man by the name of Tom moseyed over to the food table.  I had met a couple of the dudes in Slayer but never TOM!  Did he look menacing?  Not really.  Was he Tom Araya, the FRONT man of a band that not only every bro I have respects, but has been fronting this “Slayer” metal act since when my Mom had to dress me and cut up my french toast?  Yep.

I don’t get nervous often.  I pride myself on this.  It DOES happen, though.  Once in a blue moon.  USUALLY when someone I look up to ends up being more generous with their time and even COOLER than I expected.  That’s what went down.  I HAD to do SOMEthing.  It’s just Tom and I in this huge room (almost actually a floor underneath the stage) at The Moore.  I had no interview planned and no greeting ready for the quiet and relaxed-looking Mr Araya.  Fishing through my pockets like people tend to do when thinking, almost hoping to find an answer deep down in there somewhere, I come upon a couple trading cards.  BINGO!  One, being a Rock Girl 2003 Trading Card and the other, METAL SHOP.  Yes!  I can give him my card!
So with a non intrusive, “Hey there…Tom?”, I shove my hand out with the cards, tell him about my little radio thing I do, quickly, thank him for being so BADASS all these years and give a grin.  He returns it and thanks me, takes the cards, and well, what more do I need!  I walk back over to the chips and chow on a few, feeling quite satisfied with myself.  It could end there and the night would be an ‘A’ in my book.  But no, Mr Reign in Blood walks over to the table and starts interviewing ME about Metal Shop!  I think it was the combo of it being HIM on top of this look he had.  Not like, jeans and sleeveless shirt look.  Like, the look of a dude that has been around the world a few times, knows what he stands for and will judge YOU far slower than you, him.  That’s it!  I don’t even know what we talked about.  It was only five minutes, but one of my favorite five I can recall.  It was a lil bit like hanging with Santa Clause!  But if like, he was from Chile and sang about Dead Skin Masks…you know?
